ECONOMISTS' PAPERS
Series Two: The Diaries of John Neville Keynes, 1864-1917, from Cambridge University Library

This is one of the outstanding diaries of the Victorian and Edwardian period. It is an important source for:

  • masculinity
  • the history of education
  • the history of women
  • the history of economic thought

It describes, in detail, the schooldays, student years and academic career of a leading figure in Cambridge society and an active promoter of women's education.  It also portrays Victorian family life, moral crises of the late Victorian period, the impact of wars on those at home and intellectual life in Cambridge.  All of this would be remarkable enough, but the diary also records the development of his son, John Maynard Keynes, many of whose schoolboy letters are copied into the diaries.
