vol 1 - 3 Jan 1787 - 13 Jan 1822 Indexed
vol 2 - 12 July 1794 - 2 Feb 1822 Indexed
These volumes contain letters to John Adams, John Quincy Adams, Aaron Burr, Albert Gallatin, Thomas Jefferson, Roswell King, General Wilkinson and others. For instance, on 27 May 1821 Butler writes to Roswell King, Manager of his Georgia Plantations:
“…I have recd your letter of the 13th, it is explanatory, & of course satisfactory. In it you say we are in a fair way of finishing planting this day – the 13th of this month was on Sunday – I hope you rested on Sunday – I observe in your return of the 13th that 18 hands were in hospital; I suspect that some of them impose on us; We miss poor Tinah, it is however better to be on the indulging side.
I yesterday had a visit from Mr Maryon Gibbs – he told me that … you gave him a boat & hands to Mr Coupers – I approve of you doing so in this instance but I wish you to clearly understand that it is my express instructions & I do enjoin on you never to lend my hands to any person who does not take you a letter from myself. It is very easy for persons at distance to get their friends accommodated at the expense of others…”

These letters provide a very full account of life on the plantations and typically run to 3 closely written pages each (c1200 words). In a letter of 17 Sep 1803, Roswell King comments:
“Honoured Sir,
All Matters go on by the Hardest, it appears to be impossible to keep work up to the time of the year. So much Sobing & Sickness makes all things behindhand. We have got through Clearing the pasture & Bram has got on tolerable well in clearing 8 or 10 acres new ground between Bair-Hill & the New field. It appears we shall not be able to Collect much Marsh-grass for want of time. All the dung at Tide Island is moved near the Water & a heavy job it was. Say about 5 or 600 Tons. Excellent manure of the Cutt was through the Marsh to Racoon point. I should think well to bring it to Hampton, but to carry it by £5 is very tedious. I find it does very well on the tide land. The 7 acres of Rice manured that never produced well before is now very Excellent Rice far superior to Either of the other two Marsh squares No 2 & 3 – these squares must be dug up this fall. I talked of having Setlement No 3 all cut down before our harvest (but all in vain) the harvest came in sooner than I expected was one reason. The ditchers have been most of the time for several weeks underbrushing (say two thirds done). As soon as we get the Rice in the Barn-Yard shall make Exertions to finnish under Brushing & Cutting down the whole of No 3 – the Ditchers are now diging for the foundation of the Rice Machine. Sherman says he will have the Machine yet to beat Rice in November – the poor man has been very unfortunate in loosing his Eyesight or I believe he would have had it done pretty well to the time. I have no faith of its beating before Christmass – I shall begin to beat with the Ox machine the first of November if the weather will admit – but I hope the weather will be warm for Rice to Beat well – I wish I knew what your Intention were about planting No 4 the next year. My Opinion is Plant as little as possible at Hampton, plant none out side of the Banks at Experiment & plant as much as possible at Lac Island - such Business ought to be well known a longe time before hand to make proper Arangements. There is no accounts of the New Negroes. Mr Mein informd me some weeks past they might be Expected dayly. I have not seen Mrs Cunningham but Expect it will be difficult to purchase all her Negroes as I understand there is a Mortgage on them & that she will have Indulgence to try & clear them. If she sells them these will come but very little to her Share.”
That completes the first page of the letter which then goes on to provide “A Statement of the Cotton Crop for the Year 1802, what Shipped, what packed on hand & what supposed to be on hand unpacked…” including details of where shipped (Manchester, Liverpool, London), a separate statement for the Hampton plantation, and “A Statement of Cotton picked in the present Crop [by] George, Santee, Bram, Morris & Sambo” including a comparison with the amount picked by the same Drivers at that time the previous year. The letter continues with details of sickness:
“…the people hear complain very much this wet weather with fevers & Colds. None very ill except a little child. The Meazles are done, but the effects of it are plenty – Carpenter Jimmy (Virginian) has been sick a long time & tryes hard to dye (I fear he will) he has no will to live. No Deaths.”
It finishes with discussions of Contracts and shipping. Other letters provide detailed accounts of slave purchases, misdemeanours, punishments, new crops tried, new machinery employed, and chart the course of the Planting Year, on a weekly basis.
