Introduction to the Microfiche and Guide

This publication reproduces books which were published between 1538 and 1830. Facsimiles of imprints within these dates which were printed before 1950 have also been included.

The volumes have been filmed in the library's shelf order: that is by date of imprint and within date order, alphabetically by author or title. To provide an eye-legible indication of the start of each volume, a blank frame occurs before each volume. Where an edition is bound with others in one volume, the complete volume is reproduced at the shelf position of the volume; in this case a blank frame will occur before the volume but not before each edition. The header strips give the date and first three letters of the author or title of the first and last frames on each fiche.

This guide contains a catalogue of books and an author/title index. Each edition has been given a brief entry in the catalogue of books. The entries are taken from the COMfiche catalogue used by the Birmingham Central Library, combined with information from the title page as it appears on the microfiche. For more detailed information the COMfiche at the Birmingham Central Library should be consulted.

Each entry comprises the author's surname and initials (where known) in bold type followed by a brief title and, in italics enclosed by square brackets, other information which may be relevant to the edition. A title in square brackets has been created for cataloguing purposes and does not necessarily match the title page. Below the author and title are, on the left, the edition's unique number and, on the right, the fiche frame reference. The entries are arranged by date and within date order, alphabetically by author or title. For editions bound together in one volume, an entry occurs at the date of imprint for each edition.
An author/title index has been created, giving author, title, date of imprint and fiche frame reference. This index also provides cross references where necessary.
