Folder 16 contains copies of the typescripts The Foreign Cemeteries of Kobe and Osaka and ‘The Forgotten Grave’ by Williams, with accompanying correspondence, notes and cuttings relating to the story of Antoine Pierre Van der Aa, a Belgian who died in 1870 and was the first foreigner to be buried in Osaka.

English silk expert who founded the firm of Aspinall, Cornes and Co. in Yokohama. Scrapbook compiled after 1981 containing photographs, notes, typescripts, photocopies and press cuttings (1909–36) relating to Frederick Cornes and the company he founded.

Scrapbook with name index containing press cuttings of articles on the history of foreign teachers in Japan by Sir Vere Redman in the Asahi Evening News from 1964 to 1966. Press cuttings and extracts from journals of articles by others (1965–78) are also included.

Notes and references from nineteenth century newspapers, and press cuttings, correspondence and articles (1950–76) relating to the influence of western customs and society and the history of Tokyo in the context of the foreign settlements. Comparisons with the Japan of the 1960s to the 1980s are sometimes included in press cuttings. There are two pamphlets; one an illustrated tourist pamphlet relating to the 1964 Olympic Games, entitled
Tokyo Invites, published by the Organizing Committee for the Games of the Eighteenth Olympiad; the other a pamphlet in Japanese and English entitled Oriental Goddess (1974–75), by Japanese businesswoman Mama Ginbasha.

The first British doctor in Japan, who arrived c.1862 as medical officer for the British Legation. Correspondence, photocopies from Japanese microfilm (1982–83) and a typescript of a speech by Sir Hugh Cortazzi in 1983.

Postcards, press cuttings (1958–68), notes and references relating to Yokohama’s history and foreign influence. Included is a copy of Kanagawa Community News, Japan vol. 15, (November 1968), with an article relating to various phases of Yokohama settlement. There is also a typescript of a paper on the hospitals of Yokohama by D Malcolm Edwards. A subject index to the file is in folder 74
