Vol III Correspondence, chiefly with Robert Cadell and James Ballantyne, 1825-8. The other correspondents are Archibald Constable, 1825-6; Sir Adam Ferguson, 1827; J G Lockhart, 1827; Charles Mills, historian, 1825; and John Murray (?1816). There is an inventory of Scott’s letters, found among Constable’s papers and sent to Cadell, signed by David Constable, 1833.

The letters, most of which concern his work, are in Scott’s own hand, except for a few written by his family and friends.

They concern Sit Walter Scott’s finances and the affairs of his family, and the publication of his works, particularly the poetry, the Life of Napoleon Buonaparte, and the Abbotsford edition of the Waverley novels (1842-7). Lockhart also discusses his own biography of Scott, and an early draft of a passage concerning Scott’s relationship with Joseph Train is included (f 47).
