OLIPHANT:

The Collected Writings of Margaret Oliphant (1828-1897), Parts 1 to 4

Nineteenth Century Literary Manuscripts: Part 1: The Browning, Eliot, Thackeray and Trollope Manuscripts from the British Library, London

This project makes avaialble - for the first time - original manuscript resources for the study of Nineteenth Century Literature from libraries across the world.

Part 1 contains 60 manuscripts from Britain's national collection of literary manuscripts in the British Library with a particular focus on five key authors.

There are 31 manuscripts relating to George Eliot, including annotated printer's copies of seven of her major novels (Adam Bede, The Mill on the Floss, Silas Marner, Romola, Felix Holt, the Radical, Middlemarch and Daniel Deronda). We also include Impressions of Theophrastus Such, The Spanish Gypsy - A Poem, a further volume of manuscript poems by Eliot, a notebook for Romola, a list of themes for poems, and four volumes of correspondence (featuring a fascinating exchange of letters with Herbert Spencer).  For good measure we also include Aristotle by George Henry Lewes, the married man with whom she lived for many happy years.

There are 22 manuscripts by and relating to William Makepeace Thackeray, such as fragmentary drafts of The Newcomes, numerous manuscript notes relating to Denis Duval, a manuscipt play, four volumes of letters, eleven volumes of diaries and unpublished accompts and miscellanea.  The manuuscripts are enlivened by many original sketches by Thackeray.

Anthony Trollope is represented by a biographical sketch of Thackeray and Trollope's own manuscript Autobiography.

Elizabeth Barrett Browning is represented by the holograph manuscript of her Sonnets from the Portuguese, and Robert Browning by the massive The Ring and the Book featuring many heavily rewritten segments and letters relating to the publication of the manuscript.

A handful of literary manuscripts of Wilkie Collins and Benjamin Disraeli complete the publication.

20 reels of 35mm silver-halide positive microfilm.
