OLIPHANT:

The Collected Writings of Margaret Oliphant (1828-1897), Parts 1 to 4

Of Related Interest: Oliphant the Correspondence and Literary Manuscripts of Margaret Oliphant (1828-1897) from the National Library of Scotland

Whilst the "Collected Writings" enable scholars to look afresh at the complete range of Margaret Oliphant's writings, the "Correspondence and Literary Manuscripts" provide an opportunity to examine and understand the relationship between her life and her writing.

Portions of the original manuscript of her first work Passages in the life of Margaret Maitland are included, together with her first publishing contract with Henry Colburn, the London publisher. All of Margaret Oliphant's correspondence with Blackwood's Magazine is included in this microfilm edition, further facilitating the study of the literary market place and the commerce of literature.

The strains of her household and her need for extra cash to make ends meet are revealed:

"I should like very much if you would employ me in some miscellaneous work, reviews or essays of a lighter sort, by which I might make fifty pounds."
Letter to Blackwoods, MS 4106, 28 March 1854

"It happens that just at this present time I am considerably in want of money."
Letter to Blackwoods, MS 4106, 4 August 1854

Her diaries and numerous autobiographical sources amplify the evidence given in these letters and tell us a great deal about her domestic life and her own perception of her worth as a writer. The collection also includes manuscripts such as Zaidee, The Quiet Heart, and Annals of a Publishing House, and there is extensive correspondence between Oliphant and her sons and nieces, and with various contemporaries such as Geraldine Jewsbury, Walter Besant and the Carlyles.
