Notes to the Detailed List of Guard-Books of Letters
The Number gives the call number assigned to each letter after the editors of the new Correspondence had completed the chronological re-arrangement. Capital P after a number indicates that the letter is a photocopy. Dates in brackets were supplied by the Burke editors or denote an uncertain reading.
In the Correspondent column, EB is Edmund Burke, JB is Jane Burke, his wife, RBSr is Richard Burke, Edmund's brother, RBJr is Richard Burke, Edmund's son, WB is William Burke, Edmund's 'cousin'. Other abbreviations are straightforward.
The Location abbreviations show where an original letter was to be found when the listing was in preparation. Where only manuscript copies of an original survive only the location of the Sheffield copy is quoted. The abbreviations of these sources are:
